A few weeks ago on a weekend in Berlin, I finally managed to visit the Tempelhof – the field of the ex-airport that Berliners have reclaimed (for the full amazing story see here). It’s astounding to see such a huge open space right in the centre of a city – this place is vast. Locals use it to skate, run, landsurf, picnic and party. Oh and one couple who were trialing out a two-horizontal-wheeled mini skateboard on each foot – seriously.
But the best part is of course the Pioneer garden (yup!). Hundreds of people have come together to build this breathtaking community garden full of seating, planters, flowers and plants. The seating is there for anyone to use – you never feel like you don’t belong. This is the most charmingly haphazard looking garden ever. It’s like an ingenious artistic rag-and-bone man’s allotment. Basically my dream garden.
